What does the intermediate school cadetship cover?

The intermediate school cadetship is divided into four sessions. These sessions cover the same topics as the primary school cadetship in greater detail:

  1. Introductory session: students are introduced to the range of species in New Zealand and some of the threats they face. During this session we typically repeat the ‘in and out’ game, but increase the difficulty and range of species covered.
  2. Treasuring the environment: students learn about why New Zealand’s native species are special and unique. Our facilitators weave in conservation stories from their own work and from throughout New Zealand to illustrate the changes in New Zealand’s biota and conservation practices.
  3. Meet the predators: students learn about the key mammalian predators that pose a threat to native species. Coupled with Pest Free Howick’s taxidermy collection, our facilitators share engaging facts and stories to illustrate the differences between each of these pests.
  4. Taking Action & Reflection: students reflect on their learnings and design their own action plans. We encourage students to design action plans based within school grounds or their neighbourhood, although many students will also implement meaningful action plans in and around their homes.
