CADETSHIP PROGRAMME

What is the cadetship programme?

Pest Free Howick works closely with the schools of Howick Ward. The cadetship programme aims to increase the environmental knowledge and skills of primary and intermediate students. This is particularly important because it helps students to understand the positive impact of their efforts, especially in relation to the moth plant pod competition. The cadetship programme consists of three sessions for primary schools and four sessions for intermediate schools. The sessions have a ‘pest-free focus’ but also cover a range of environmental issues affecting New Zealand. The cadetship started in 2021 with a pilot programme in Somerville Intermediate. Since then, it has been rolled out to 11 schools and over 430 students. The programme is designed to achieve three key objectives:

  1. Students will understand why New Zealand’s biodiversity is unique and worth protecting.
  2. Students will know the key predators in New Zealand and the impact they have on flora and fauna.
  3. Students will be inspired to make a difference from their own backyard.
